Tweak Vista Software

I thought that I start my Windows Vista Tweaks blog by writing about all the Vista Tweak Softwares that are available on the Internet. Three months have passed since the initial release of Windows Vista and there are only a handful of applications that tweak the new Microsoft operating system. The first program that I’m going to analyze is called Tweak Vista by the Stardock Creation.

Tweak Vista has four tabs that are named DWM, UAP, IE7 Search and Environment. The acronyms are kinda confusing for new users and I would like to explain them in detail. DWM means Desktop Window Manager and UAP means User Account Protection. The first handles the look and feel of Microsoft Windows Vista while the second handles the new protection that was introduced by Microsoft in Vista.

As you can see in the above screenshot the DWM tab handles several interface settings and may even enable the new interface even though your computer has a unsupported video card. You can also force software emulation. If you want to speed up your system you should disable most features that are available in this tab.

The User Account Protection is a very useful method to prevent that applications are run from an Administrators account. Several experienced users don’t like this feature this much and like to tweak it to make it less irritating. Every time you unpack something using Winrar a popup will appear asking if you want to allow this access.

You can disable this mode for users who log into the system as administrators and keep UAP active for all other users. It is also possible to disable User Account Protection at all which I would not recommend.

You can add new search engines to the Internet Explorer 7 default search engine list and delete engines from the list as well. Last but not least it is possible to change User Environment Settings like the path to the temp dir using Tweak Vista.

Tweak Vista does not offer much functionality but it addresses the User Account Protection problem that most new Vista users will experience.
